You might know that you like single malt Scotch whiskey, but do you know what it is? Single malt Scotch is actually one of three different Scotch whiskey varieties: grain, malt, and blended.
Let’s explore the three different types of Scotch.
Grain whiskey: This whiskey is made from a mix of several different grains, often barley, wheat, and maize. Grain whiskey is produced using modern techniques (as opposed to the copper pot stills that malt whiskey requires) and does not vary dramatically by distillery.
Malt whiskey: The most coveted of Scotch whiskeys, malt whiskey is made from malted barley alone – no other grains are involved. It is available both single malt and vatted (a mix of different malt whiskeys). Malt whiskey is known for its personality, which is overpowering to some and ideal to others.
Blended whiskey: A compromise between malt and grain, blended whiskey contains at least 2/3 grain Scotch and 1/3 malt. Thus, blends provide some of the unique flavors found in malts, but at significantly lower prices.
To be considered Scotch, grain, malt, and blended whiskey batches must have matured for over three years after being distilled in Scotland. That’s one of the reasons the best single malt Scotch tastes so good!
