The sweetness of Rum has never really been my thing. In general I prefer a strong sip of the best scotch or a good
single malt whiskey. Rum is generally made with molasses, which gives a lot of rums an overtly sweet flavor that can be a turn off to an avid drinker of high quality spirits. 10 Cane Rum meanwhile is made with fresh pressed sugar grown specifically for use in making this delicious beverage. Avoiding the syrupy sweetness of molasses is essential for making a drink of this caliber and it makes 10 Cane perfect for mix drinks, as it will contribute to the flavor without overpowering.
Upon first tasting this rum, I was struck by how inviting I found it’s fruity scent. As a person not generally interested in those sorts of beverages I did not expect to appreciate the way they hit my senses and yet there I was. The texture and flavor were idyllic for my single malt scotch trained pallet. Further research after drinking suggests that many spirit enthusiasts have some qualms with classifying 10 Cane as a rum specifically, partially for it’s aversion to molasses but also because to some it seems closer to a whiskey.
For my money it is a tasty and satisfying drink both straight and in a cocktail. I would recommend it to regular rum drinkers and the rum averse alike!
